What Type of Act Do I Need?

There are typically two types of Notarial Acts, an Acknowledgement and a Jurat, also known as an Oath or Affirmation. Because a Notary Public does not practice law and can not offer legal advice, you must know which type of act you require. Usually, if you have a form that has a notary block, it will tell you what needs to happen. If it says anything about “sworn and subscribed”, your document requires that you take an oath or affirmation before signing. If not, it is usually an acknowledgement. Either requires a face-to-face meeting, ID validation, and a signature.
